DALI Control

Introduction to DALI & DALI 2 Lighting Control

DALI, which stands for Digital Addressable Lighting Interface, is an open standard protocol used in building automation to control lighting systems.

It was developed to provide a standardised method of communication between lighting devices and controllers, allowing for greater flexibility, energy efficiency, and ease of maintenance.

Key Features of DALI

Interoperability:
DALI is an open standard, meaning devices from different manufacturers can communicate seamlessly.
Ensures that users are not locked into a single manufacturer's ecosystem.

Scalability:
Suitable for small installations with a few lights as well as large-scale applications with thousands of fixtures. Can control up to 64 individual devices per DALI line.

Flexibility:
Supports a wide range of commands and functionalities, including dimming, switching, and scene setting.
Allows for individual, group, and broadcast control of lighting fixtures.

Components of a DALI System

DALI Controller:

Acts as the brain of the system, sending commands to the lighting fixtures. Can be integrated into building management systems for centralised control.

DALI Ballasts and Drivers:

Devices that receive commands from the controller and regulate the power to the lighting fixtures. Can be used with various types of lighting, including LEDs, fluorescent, and HID lamps.

DALI Sensors and Input Devices:
Include occupancy sensors, daylight sensors, and wall switches.
Provide input to the controller for automated lighting adjustments.

Benefits of Using DALI

Energy Efficiency:

  • Precise control over lighting levels reduces energy consumption.

  • Supports daylight harvesting and occupancy sensing to minimise waste.

Enhanced User Experience:

  • Allows for customised lighting scenes tailored to different activities and preferences.

  • Smooth dimming capabilities improve comfort and ambiance.

Maintenance and Monitoring:

  • Provides status feedback from each device, making it easier to identify and address issues.

  • Reduces downtime and maintenance costs through proactive management.
